Movie Review: Nowhere Boy

As many of you know, I love John Lennon, in both his music and writing about him. When it comes to movie adaptations of musicians' life, I'm always a little wary of watching them, more about being disappointed about how realistic the movie is and whether it sticks to fact instead of fiction. This movie looks over John Lennon's teenage years up till the point where he leaves for Hamburg and where film Backbeat begins. This film was a very good film, and I'd say about 90% of what happened in the film really did happen, although, despite sounding like John Lennon, the actor who portrayed him didn't really look like him(at least that's what I though, but then again, Joaquin Phoenix doesn't look like Johnny Cash). The actresses who played Johns Aunt Mimi and mother Julia really did a good job, giving contrast to how each is and how each behaves. Neither one of these women was wrong in what they did with John Lennon, they just did what they could with who they were. John Lennon's life is tragic in the sense that you could say he had everything, and yet, nothing.
Overall, this film while good, was not as good as Backbeat to me, but that's just my opinion, and I know many people really like this film, and let me assure you I am one of those people. This movie does well to John lennon(and just in time for his almost 70th birthday. Isn't that convenient?)
Rating: 3.5/5
